They eat like birds

There is something about waking up to the lilt of songbirds.

The air was absolutely crisp and clear after the rain this morning. Just beautiful! I am watching the birds at the sunflower seed buffet I've set out for them. I go so far as to offer pre-shelled seeds for the very spoiled avian crew. I'm surprised any of these eating machines can get off the ground after devouring all the seeds. Whoever said "they eat like birds" obviously never visited with this crowd!

The variety of birds that come to my back deck easily makes up for any expense, though. Just today I've seen chickadees, titmice, a red-bellied woodpecker, goldfinches, and white-bellied and brown-head nuthatches. This past week I've seen a Cooper's hawk, blue birds (my favorite!), red finches, a downy woodpecker, dark-eyed junco, and Carolina wrens. Over the years, we've identified over 28 varieties of birds in our backyard. One Christmas Day, we even had a wild turkey strolling around back there! And all this in the middle of a residential subdivision!

Oh - the cookies are ready. Time for a glass of milk and warm sugar cookies!

Watching the birds coming to the feeder or to drink can be so entertaining. A few years ago we had two magpies who spent the entire summer on our back deck (they made a horrible mess of the outdoor chairs ....lol). Each morning 'Scruffy' would be on the kitchen windowsill, pecking on the window, waiting for her food. When she saw me leave the kitchen she would hop down and go over to the family room door, where she knew I would bring her food. She and her mate, 'Buddy', could sometimes be coaxed into the house even. Their carolling kept us enthralled all summer. Their offspring, whom we named 'Rossini' (composer of 'The Thieving Magpie'), still comes visiting and he is a wonderful mimic, very accurately coping the sounds of cars and other birds and animals.

Have a lovely day, Jane.
